It goes to show that even in heaven, you don't have to do flashy stuff like create the universe in seven days flat to get your reward. Helping one guy to appreciate life is all it takes. And the film's ending is yet further proof of his cosmic inability to do so. Nothing, not even actual prison, will let him leave the prison of his humdrum small-town existence. Despite his personal wishes to explore the world, he hews so fiercely to a small community that his absence from it would have driven it into ruinous inequity.

It turns out every side wants to claim George Bailey as their own and Mr. Potter as the enemy. George jumped off the bridge that evening. George is a good man that sacrificed his dreams and his youth on behalf of the citizens of his small town. He inherited the loan business of his father and he gave up traveling the world and joining University as scheduled. Later he resisted the proposals of the evil banker Mr. Potter, and never sold his business to protect the poor community of Bedford Falls and offer a means to afford to buy their own house. He married his beloved Mary Hatch Bailey and had four children with her and a tough life with his family.
