How do paddle holsters work




















This holster is a great option for open carrying at your home, on your property, hunting, or at the range if they allow it. If you are looking to open carry in public we suggest a level two or three retention holster. This means you have two or three things keeping the gun in place.

You can also think of it as the number of steps you have to take to remove your gun from its holster. The paddle clip portion of your holster sits flush with your body and you may worry that it is uncomfortable.

While some people find it uncomfortable, many find they do not notice it is there and it can actually be quite comfortable. You may discover that wearing an undershirt between the holster and your body or tucking in your shirt helps make the paddle more comfortable. While physically it might be comfortable, mentally you may worry about it falling off if you are doing rigorous physical activity.

If you are wearing the paddle holster for long periods and will be sitting down you may find it is not the right holster for you. Utilizing a proper belt with a paddle holster can increase your comfort level.

A regular belt may not be able to support the weight of your gun and holster. By this point, you probably know a lot more about Kydex paddle holsters than you did at that start of this article.

Now for the question you really want answered, do you need a Kydex paddle holster? Technically, no you do not NEED a Kydex paddle holster but we highly recommend it as the second holster you get.

Press it in firmly until the handgun is seated fully into the body of the holster. If you pick up the holstered handgun by the handle, the holster should remain in place. Otherwise, the holster will pull out of your waistband and stay on the handgun when you draw your weapon. Some paddle holsters are adjustable so you can improve the fit. Otherwise, you may have to find a different handgun and holster combination. Latch the gun into the holster, if your holster model has a latch.

Many models of paddle holsters have button latches, but some do not. If yours does have a latch, snap it in place to further secure the weapon. Most latches are made so that you can easily unlatch them with your thumb as you draw the weapon. Place the holstered pistol above your waistband, paddle side facing in. Grab the holstered handgun by its handle, with your finger off the trigger. The rigid paddle portion of the holster faces inward toward your body, and will tuck into your waistband. The part of the holster that holds the firearm will hang over the outside of your waistband.

Alternatively, you can place the holster over your weak side hip so that you draw the weapon across your front with your dominant hand. Some people like to place the holster over their tailbones for added concealment, but you run the risk of hurting yourself if you fall on your back. Slide the paddle between your waistband and your underwear. Push the paddle completely over the waistband of your pants, as far downward as it will go.

You should feel the tension of the paddle pressing against the waistband of your pants. The holster will remain much more secure, however, if you tuck it inside your waistband and over your belt. This security clip helps prevent the holster from sliding out when you draw your weapon.

Part 3. Draw the firearm from the holster with a smooth, secure motion. Grab the handle of the gun with your dominant hand and lift it straight up. Once the barrel has cleared the holster, grip the firearm with both hands and practice aiming the weapon.

If the holster has a button latch, you will need to unsnap the latch before removing the gun. Use your thumb to unlatch it as you grab onto the gun handle. The tension and lip on the clip of the paddle should hold the holster in place as you remove the gun, especially if you lift the gun straight up.

Keep your finger away from the trigger unless and until you plan to shoot, even when the safety is still on. For business wear, my Bianchi shoulder rig works great. The only paddle that I find reliable is the Aker of the last five years or so. While I like Fobus holsters, the paddles are unreliable for me, and Galco paddles are both unreliable and uncomfortable. A paddle holster is not only for concealed carry, and can be carried openly with confidence.

You still must be aware of your surroundings. A covering garment is always a great idea, but even with a covering garment, most paddle holsters are not as concealable as a belt holster which holds closer to your body.

If you carry openly, you must always be aware of your surroundings and some do carry openly often, and others do so in quick trips to town, if they carry openly around their property as some do… in part due to large predatory animals..

I think paddle holsters are great at least my Fobus,For those of you who like bigger weapons maybe not,I carry a glock 27 Small but very nice. The best holster I ever had was a paddle model A Rogers holster that alowed me to carry a relativly large revolver either concealed or openly in comfort. It was very secure and fast to use. Unfortunatly Safariland bought his patent and discarded the best features of his design in making I think threir model. I bought one after wearing out my second hand Rogers after over 20 years of constant use.

It is not near the holster the Rogers was and is now gathering dust in a closet. My paddle holster works great, excellent retention. To remove the holster, simply pull it out, safely store it, and go on about your business. Paddle holsters are relatively easy to conceal provided you are properly dressed for concealed carry. Loose fitting shirts, coats and jackets can ensure more effective concealment while carrying with a paddle holster. Some find they are more comfortable while seated.
